Age category: Young Adult

Release Date: April 6th 2021

Seventeen-year-old Iris Hollow has always been strange. Something happened to her and her two older sisters when they were children, something they can’t quite remember but that left each of them with an identical half-moon scar at the base of their throats.

Iris has spent most of her teenage years trying to avoid the weirdness that sticks to her like tar. But when her eldest sister, Grey, goes missing under suspicious circumstances, Iris learns just how weird her life can get: horned men start shadowing her, a corpse falls out of her sister’s ceiling, and ugly, impossible memories start to twist their way to the forefront of her mind.

As Iris retraces Grey’s last known footsteps and follows the increasingly bizarre trail of breadcrumbs she left behind, it becomes apparent that the only way to save her sister is to decipher the mystery of what happened to them as children.

The closer Iris gets to the truth, the closer she comes to understanding that the answer is dark and dangerous – and that Grey has been keeping a terrible secret from her for years.

I was desperate to read this from the moment I first saw that absolutely stunning cover over on Netgalley. They were giving out a free sampler at the time and I just couldn’t resist. After reading that I was hooked and desperate to read more so I went right out and bought the book.

This is a totally creeptastic, dark fairy tale that I genuinely couldn’t put down. The writing style is beautiful, eerie, gothic and lyrical. Honestly it was just a joy to read it really was.

This is the story of the Hollow sisters, three beautiful sisters who have always been surrounded by strangeness as far back as they can remember and that only stretches back to the night they were returned to the dark streets of Edinburgh after they had disappeared without a trace for a month when they were just little girls.

None of them know where they were or what happened to them during the month they were gone and they have no memories of their life prior to their disappearance.

Weird, odd and just plain strange things seem to happen around the sisters, things that can’t be explained.

When the oldest sister Grey disappears again Iris and Vivi follow the clues that Grey has left behind in order to find her, rescue her and in doing so uncover the truth about what happened to them all those years ago.

This was a genuinely grotesque, odd and completely absorbing mystery full of unusual and unexpected twists and turns. In just a few hundred pages the author manages to build an intricate and magical world that you only begin the understand in the latter parts of the story.

It is all weaved together expertly and leaves the reader absolutely desperate to learn more.

It is vivid, atmospheric and so easy to paint a picture in your mind of what is happening. The sights, the smells, the feelings of complete unease.

It’s really a very, very dark and interesting book with a revelation at the end that left me completely shocked!

It was totally unsettling, twisted and terribly brilliant. I honestly don’t have a single criticism or bad word to say about this book. I loved every weird and spooky minute of it!
