Twisted, thrilling and at times grotesque! This debut thriller had my heart pounding. Unputdownable!

The creepiest debut thriller you will read this year!
One little girl.
Mirabelle’s mother loves her. She’s her ‘little doll’. Mother dresses her, paints her face, and plaits her hair. But as Mirabelle grows, the dresses no longer fit quite as well, the face paint no longer looks quite so pretty. And Mother isn’t happy.

Two little girls.
On Mirabelle’s 13th birthday, Mother arrives home with a present – a new sister, 5-year-old Clarabelle, who Mother has rescued from the outside world.

But Mother only needs one.
As it dawns on Mirabelle that there is a new ‘little doll’ in her house, she also realizes that her life isn’t what she thought it was. And that dolls often end up on the scrap heap…

I went into this book without having a clue what to expect. It’s been sat on my shelf for a while, I remember picking it up for £2 on Amazon and thinking it sounded creepy.

I decided to pick it up when I wanted something short to read during a few busy days. I did not expect to rate it 5 stars. I did not expect to be so completely gripped.

This is Abby’s debut novel and after reading this I can say that I will be eagerly awaiting her next!

This is the story of a disturbed woman who keeps her daughter locked in the house and dresses her up like a beautiful, perfect doll. She dresses her in pretty clothes and paints her face and doesn’t treat her like a normal living girl.

Mother keeps boards nailed to the windows and the curtains sewn shut. She tells her perfect little Mirabelle it is all for her own safety. Mother is only protecting her from the outside world that will only hurt her.

Mirabelle is 13 now and becoming a woman. When the dresses start getting too tight Mother isn’t happy. Mother brings home another perfect little doll and Mirabelle starts to worry that Mother doesn’t actually love her anymore.

For such a short book this story is absolutely jam packed. We learn so much about Mother as well as her past and her family. At times you find yourself actually feeling sorry for her despite all the things that she’s done.

From about halfway through I genuinely could not put it down. It was thrilling, twisted, grotesque at times. My heart was absolutely pounding and just when you think things might just work out okay something else happens!

It was incredible.

It’s another one of those books that is very hard to review without spoiling the plot so ill just say that Abby is an absolute master at creating tension and suspense. She kept me guessing right to the end and I am so glad I decided to read it because its one of the best books I have read this year so far.
